I am taking a look at http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdgraph.en.html It seems to be even too easy, so I must be unaware of some subtlety! ;-) Anyway: the documentation seems to state that the option --grid-dash 1:0 will give solid grid lines.
