The Gaupol project seems to be maintaing the generic functionality
both inside Gaupol and inside a separate Python library called
'python-aeidon', which is built from the same source. Instead of
demoting 'gaupol' to Suggests I would propose to port the subtitle
functionality of the Translate Toolkit to that library and make it
depend on it. That won't pull in a whole subtitle editor, but just a
Python library.

The consequence of that would be that you wouldn't have to install a
Suggests to stop a part of Translate Toolkit from crashing and make it
functional, but that it would be working out of the box.
