As part of the migration to python2.6 , gdb should probably make that dependency more flexible, ideally just on the default debian version of python.
gdb has been now rebuilt on almost[0] all architectures with Python 2.6, both in testing and unstable. The dependency cannot be really made more flexible, as gdb links to libpythonX.Y.
[0] The remaining one is ia64, see bug #576720. Therefore I keep the bug open.
