It works fine here on my t61p.

Open alsamixer
Choose <F4>
scroll to Capture
toggle to Capture LR via spacetab
set Capture level via 7 tab
scroll to Digital
set Dgital level via 7 tab
scroll to Input Source
toggle to Internal Mic via up/down tab
close alsamixer via <ESC>

do
$ arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav foobar.wav
Sing Hallejulia for 10 sec
$ aplay foobar.wav

You should enjoy your song now?
