Yes. I use no proxy to access this machine (it's local). The directories in question had been drwx--s--- for many months, during which I'd re-booted the computer at least once and both upgraded and restarted the browser many many times. Many of the pages in question were new since the directory had its restrictive permissions. Yet the pages sometimes displayed - usually enough, in fact, that I only became aware of the problem because of a colleague having problem when he reloaded. So no way had the pages sat in my cache ever since they should have become inaccessible; and there was no proxy involved.
