I've been trying to reproduce with a slow connection simulation, but the progressive display is just that: progressive. And it works properly here. Try downgrading libcairo2 to the version currently in unstable (it looks like you are using the experimental one). If that doesn't fix your problem, try downgrading your X video driver.
