You should also rewrite your xorg.conf from scratch:
# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_back
# aticonfig -f --initial
If it is still not working after a reboot, stop COMPLETLY kdm and X11 at
all and execute:
# aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
Then reboot.
This will disable the brand new 2D acceleration stack, which causes some
more problems.
