Hi, My flatmate's machine exhibits this bug too. Hardware is amd64, but the bug appears with fresh installs of both amd64 and i386 versions of current stable.
Gnome apps refused to start, and I tracked it down to the vfs stuff using libxml2 to read mime-related xml files. Marc's patch fixed the problem. I have *no* idea why this bug appears on my flatmate's machine and Marc's machine and (apparently) nobody elses.
