ok, it looks like #578910 (a change in ghostscript's behavior) is the
root cause, and the new stable poppler upstream 0.14 (bug #585434) fixes
the problem. however, as i understand it, 0.14 will not be shipped
with squeeze, so this problem will not be addressed; unless someone can
devise a patch against 0.12.
