Are we sure about that? The errors occur before running update-grub. It seems like what is needed here is 'if $DEBUG' as a postfix if conditional after the warn statement on line 400 of linux-image-2.6.32-5-686.postinst. Maybe everything is working fine, but apt-get sees STDERR output and thinks that means it did not work. All the other warn statements in the postinst script have that conditional.
