unblock 542872 by 508644 thanks Hmm, I wasn't cc:ed on the previous message, so was unaware you believed that bug needed to be resolved before this bug could be fixed.
There may not have been consensus in May as you say, but there have now been at least two threads on debian-devel where there was a clear consensus that this is the way forward - and it was precisely in light of that already-developed consensus that Ubuntu applied the patch in question, and that I submitted this bug.
