I'd very much like to use dpkg-maintscript-helper for this, but it would rename locally modified versions to a form not accepted by cron. I filed a bug against dpkg (#585914), should we receive no or negative response within the near future, I'll implement the alternative solution from http://wiki.debian.org/DpkgConffileHandling.
