I think GNOME was after the management of the backlight, even without pommed. So I created a test user, logged in with that test user using IceWM and stopped pommed: the backlight regulation didn't work. Starting again pommed it worked (but didn't show the popup that GNOME showed) and stopping it again it didn't work.
