It turns out this isn't entirely correct. For some of my images the comments seem to show up properly - but presented in the new UI so differently that I failed to find them, even when looking for them. So fine...just learning the new 2.11 interface. For some other images, part of the comment (the "Place:" tag) gets into the UI as accessed through the "Metadata" button in the toolbar, but some of the comment (the "Description:" tag) is only visible in the "IPTC" information under "Caption" (bottom right of the main UI of 2.11).
