This behavior change is a bug fix. This error tells you an imaps connection error. README.Debian tells you the configration is in the startup file. However, as you encountered, it's not so easy to customize ssl-program-arguments for gnutls-cli. I'll add more information to customize gnutls-cli options to close this bug.
