After not receiving any response in the bug report upstream, I decided to post a message on the forums. The main developer responded as follows:
"I could not reproduce the problem on Ubuntu but on Ubuntu everything worked OK. I it hard to investigate further since I can't reproduce the problem. I have Ubuntu 10.4 with the wxwidgets library that comes with it. I compile wxmaxima myself. It also worked on previous version of Ubuntu. " So there must be some Debian specific thing that is not working right...I will try compiling a vanilla version of wxmaxima on my pc to check Andres
