I could not reproduce that behavior on my Debian Sid/powerpc box using collectd 4.9.1-2 on an ext3 filesystem. Do you receive updates from other collectd instances using the network plugin? The only scenario I can think of that could possibly cause such behavior would be if you write a lot of data to disk, so that the disk is busy all of the time and cannot keep up with the updates coming in. What kind of output plugin do you use (rrdtool, csv?)? How many files do you write?
