After the last aptitude upgrade on my laptop I experience an issue very similar to this. I suspect it's not a wmii-only problem, because on another pc (which does not have all latest apt updates yet) running the same wmii version it can't be reproduced. Both are running squeeze.

Bug occurs with:
wmii 3.6+debian-8
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+6
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-1
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.5+6
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.3.2-6
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.4.0-1

Bug does not occur with:
wmii 3.6+debian-8
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+5
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.5+5
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.3.2-4
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.4.0-1

Several scenarios to reproduce this (my modkey is left alt, and i'm using gnome-terminal as default terminal), starting with a fresh wmii after logging in:

1. Like Francesco said: alt-enter, ctrl-d.
2. Alt-enter, alt-enter.
3. Alt-enter, alt-p and start gnome-terminal
4. Alt-enter, after starting this first terminal i can use it to start other ones with 'gnome-terminal&' as many times as i like. Only after closing all opened terminals (in whatever order), modkey stops working.
5. Alt-p and start gedit. Close gedit.
6. Combination of 4 and 1, start some gnome-terminal programs, they work fine if you don't close all of them. Start a gedit&. Close gedit.
7. ... lots of other combinations where a program is started or quit.

After all of them, wmii stops using the modkey, and i'm left in a really uncomfortable situation. It's still possible to use programs (e.g. type on the command line in an xterm) and to use the mouse pointer to switch focus between windows on the current tag/workspace.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 can still be used to switch to a text-screen, where I can restart X (invoke-rc.d gdm restart in my case).
