Thanks Karl. I believe apt-get remove --purge used to purge deinstalled config files, but some quick testing now seems to indicate that it does not - but then for the same packages dpkg --purge doesn't seem to be purging either. I'll have to investigate some more, unless you have specific examples of where it works in one and not the other.
