The character in question is xian1 (like in XianZai, "now"): 現 ["mgbuu" using chinese-b5-tsangchi as IM]. bg5latex works like a charm on my computer. Be sure to apply the patch delivered by Frank Küster, or edit c00bsmi.fd yourself and change "bsmilp" into "bsmi". (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=262967) Or if you don't feel like fiddling too much with your computer, add the following lines to your APT repository: deb http://chinese.alioth.debian.org latex-cjk/ deb-src http://chinese.alioth.debian.org latex-cjk/ and install latex-cjk-base and latex-cjk-chinese. Are you really sure that you're using "big5" as encoding, and not emacs-mule, ctext or utf-8? And you _certainly_ don't need to compile the .cjk file. Add these lines at the end of your file: %%% Local Variables: %%% mode: latex %%% coding: big5-unix %%% End: Edit your text, and save with Emacs. It should warn you if it's not in Big5 encoding.
