Hmm, why?

This is not inside a for loop, and "id -u", as opposed to "id -un",
should not be particularly expensive.

I consider the current /etc/profile to be optimized for size and
readability.

Are you trying to imply that optimizing for something other than speed
is unacceptable in *every* context?
