In the process of testing and verifying my changes to parted, I have discovered a bona-fide bug in the Linux kernel, one that prevents it from reading the disk label in some cases. See Debian bug report 582281 for details.

If it hasn't, the kernel and parted will disagree about the starting location and size of the partition in some circumstances. But parted will be right and the kernel will be wrong. -- .''`.
