Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.21

I'm trying to upgrade a machine from potato with 2.2.x to sarge with
2.6.x. This would have been much easier if dpkg didn't bomb out with
`failed to mmap /var/lib/dpkg/available: Invalid argument' (or words
to that effect - sorry, I have no cut and paste).

I can think of other more demented situations where mmap might fail,
but `kernel too new' is an obvious one. mmap is one of those things
that's not always guaranteed to work even on a filesystem with proper
semantics.

Ian.
