When I submitted this bug, I have recorded a similar wishlist against dpkg itself (#570934). So I believe both to be useful. Of course, the dh approach works only for packages using dh/debhelper 7. The first two examples come from discussions I had with people involved in Maemo when Meego started. In the context of Meego, the packaging could be relatively uniform and standardized around dh 7 and that sort of freedom would be welcome. Note that this feature can also be useful when developing a new addon and when you want to validate that it doesn't break packages by asking lucas to do a mass rebuild.
