Package: libnss-mdns Severity: wishlist On Debian installations on very small computers, perl may not be installed, only perl-base. On such systems, libnss-mdns cannot be installed because it depends on perl and perl is too big to install.
libnss-mdns appears to depend on perl only because it is used in the postinst and postrm scripts. It doesn't use any fancy Perl modules and could just as well depend on perl-base instead. Would it be OK to change the dependancy from perl to perl-base? I have already tested that this works. By editing the control file and rebuilding the package, libnss-mdns is installed and working fine on a Debian system without the 'perl' package. -Phil -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.4 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages libnss-mdns depends on: pn avahi-daemon <none> (no description available) ii base-files 5lenny5 Debian base system miscellaneous f ii libc6 2.7-18lenny2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii perl 5.10.0-19lenny2 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction libnss-mdns recommends no packages.
