Sounds like a problem with exim, not uw-imap. Or maybe you are upgrading
from a very old system?

And report back both if it worked for you, and more info on your system
that might help figure out if this is a bug somewhere in Debian or
perhaps a situation that is known but unsupported (like upgrading from
potato directly to sarge).
