Hi, I've tested the code change by pasting the relevant bit of code into Xapian's smoketest2.py and checking that it works with 1.0.20 and 1.2.0, so I'm confident it won't break 1.0.x and will work with 1.2.x.
If you want, I'm happy to make a non-maintainer upload to fix this.
