don't mix up IMAP (receiving) and SMTP (sending). If you have problems with sending, only SMTP is involved. Do you have any messages in the Error Console (Tools->Error Console)? Just run Icedove from the console in this way: $ export NSPR_LOG_FILE=/tmp/icedove-smtp.log $ export NSPR_LOG_MODULES=SMTP:5 $ icedove and try to send a email.
