This was recently discussed upstream. Here is a pointer. ls: Use pretty UTF-8 arrow when showing where symlinks point to http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-coreutils/2009-08/msg00023.html Personally I think that the threshold for adding yet another option to 'ls' should be quite high.
