Okay, you are using an experimental component (udev). Actually, NO. It uses a version from SID from the state of 4-5 months ago. It is basically the same as the Sarge version with few meta changes. I wonder what the cause of your trouble is. Please run the slmodemd manually and look for error messages. Please let me know what is happening then.
