Makes sense. Is there a standard debconf snipped I can use?

It is already possible; is it not working for you?

  Template: nodm/user
  Type: string
  Default: root
_Description: User to start a session for:
Please enter the login name of the user that will automatically be
   logged into X by nodm.

One of the main points of nodm is to be automatically set up using
preseeding to allow for unattended installs in mobile phones, kiosk
machines, or other systems which lack a keyboard.
