It appears that the default proxy settings between Thunderbird 2 and
Thunderbird 3 have changed. By resetting them (edit -> preferences ->
advanced -> network & disk space -> connection (settings ...) -> no
proxy), the problem is solved.
One strange thing though is that the "new mail account wizard" is able
to make some kind of connection with the server at the autodetection
step, thus suggesting that proxy settings are *not* used.
Thus, I think you can close this "bug".
