I checked this in xterm using lynx 2.8.4, and see that my (editing keypad "Delete" key) works like backspace. Either we're referencing an older version of lynx, or one of the variations of DEL/Backspace/Del/Delete is an issue.
The particular key I'm looking at is (in terminfo)
kdch1=\E[3~,
which is KEY_DC in curses. For a long time, lynx has treated that as the
"remove" key.
