I can try that, but I'm sorry to have to report that the same problem
has now arisen in the slrn I built from the vanilla source, so the
cause seems to be either upstream or in both versions of libslang2 -
unless it's something peculiar to my setup, which I think is unlikely,
since I have a simple .slrnrc and no macros.

I'll write something about this in the slrn mailing list and
news.software.readers, but meanwhile here are the exact symptoms I'm
currently experiencing:

On exiting a group in which there were two unread articles, slrn
reported 100000+ unread articles. Entering and leaving the group
appeared to fix this, but on re-entering with <ESC><SPACE>4, 100000+
articles were reported again. The correct total should be 1955.

After closing and opening slrn, no unread articles for the group
appear in the overview, but the two unread articles appeared as unread
after entering the group with <ESC><ENTER>4, which this time wrongly
reported 1970 articles.

This isn't quite the same behaviour as I observed and reported
earlier, and I'm unable to see a consistent pattern.

I think I've eliminated the possibility of problems with leafnode,
/var/spool/news or slrn's files in /home by purging and removing
everything and reinstalling.

If I can isolate exactly what triggers the problem, I'll let you know.
