Package: mysql-server-5.1 Severity: normal mysql-server-5.1 was automatically uninstalled during a routine unstable "aptitude upgrade". This left "/etc/init.d/mysql" behind, which I understand is in accordance with Debian policy for configuration files.
However, /etc/init.d/mysql still tries to start mysql, without realizing that the binaries are not longer present. Specifically, it dies trying to run /usr/bin/mysqladmin . The /etc/init.d/mysql script should do what other similar packages do, and silently exit when it detects that it is not installed.
