Nope.  (But thanks for the hint!)

Color me surprised, but the culprit is actually g++.  Compiling 3.02-2
under lenny (and running it under sid) works fine, but 3.02-1.4+lenny2
compiled under sid (after disabling the obsolete libtiff patch) is still
a dog.  Turns out that the tipping point is upgrading from g++-4.3 to
g++-4.4 (along with libstdc++-dev).

My local paper used to offer a free PDF of the front page, but no more.
Oh well, I've extracted today's front page -- I'm sure they won't mind.
