Your analysis is incorrect.

Simply download the script from
http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/collab-maint/deb-maint/spamassassin/tags/3.3.1-1/debian/spamassassin.init?revision=15843
and replace your broken one with it.  Or just edit yours and remove the
extraneous space.
