I think it's overly specific. A more general mechanism is best. I would suggest:

1. (Re)Introduce some way to run shell commands from debian/control.in 2. Support arbitrary variable expansion in debian/control.in (not just @cdbs@).


Thanks for the suggestion. I will consider it, it thus keep this bugreport open - but must say that simply reverting is not likely to happen.
