It's arguable whether it would be more convenient. Anyway, it doesn't _need_ to be convenient:
* -D/--debug is supposed to be used only sporadically (and ideally should be never needed).
* If you don't use -D/--debug, usage of temporary space is not significant (a few megabytes in a typical case).
