I found that this issue has been reported in the gphoto2 bug tracking system.
See gphoto2 bug #1224783: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=7648748&forum_id=18783 You can workaround the problem using: gphoto2 --camera "Canon Powershot S1 IS (PTP mode)" --port usb: ... to specify PTP mode instead of normal mode.
