Interesting.
There is no real logical explanation why I even tried this, but I just
commented out the corresponding line in dovecot's config, upgraded once
more to libssl0.9.8m-2 package and now login works again, too.
ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem
ssl_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem
#ssl_ca_file =/etc/ssl/certs/mydomain_CA.pem
(but I suppose this workaround would break client certificate
verification guessing from the docs)
