After testing with kacpimon I could get acpid working on one system and determined that power button stops producing any events after resume and has to be reloaded on the other. This looks like a kernel/configuraion issues, not something acpid can solve. Still this is partially fallout of moving the powerbtn.sh script between packages. On the first system the button probably did not work because I had the /etc/acpi/events/powerbtn.dpkg-old file. I got this by upgrading from fresh Lenny to sid kernel and acpid.
