Well, I was using epiphany (epiphany-browser 2.29.92-1) on an up-to-date Debian unstable system and icedtea6-plugin 6b18~pre2-1. The java support is not working (I tested a few websites which I know have java applets). I'm not sure how the java plugin is supposed to work if it has unresolved library dependencies [1], but switching to sun-java6-plugin made the applets work in epiphany. I searched for existing bug reports and this one seemed like a reasonable explanation why icedtea6-plugin was not working. Michael [1] ldd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so | grep "not found" libxul.so => not found libxpcom.so => not found -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
