here are some suggestions from the upstream bug report on getting a
backtrace:

  Use "make build-debug" and "make install-debug" instead of "make" and
  "make install." You will then be able to debug CRX using GDB or a
  frontend like DDD. Just use the command "gdb ./crx" and then you will
  be given a prompt. Type "run" and the game will start. At that point,
  do what it takes to make the crash happen. When it crashes, the
  debugger will freeze it and stop it from exiting. You can then type
  "bt" into the GDB prompt and it will give a full backtrace which you
  can show the developers.

can anyone encountering this problem do this.  upstream says they will
help if we can send them a backtrace.
