What font is it trying to use?  Is there something goofy about the fonts on 
your system?  Try this:

xlsfonts -fn "-*-*-medium-r-*-*-*-240-*-*-m-*-*-*"
xlsfonts -fn "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-180-*-*-m-*-*-*"
xlsfonts -fn "-*-*-*-r-*-*-*-240-*-*-m-*-*-*"

It's probably trying the first one in the list.
