It would help a lot to mention TMPDIR in the dpkg-deb manpage. Bug 247086 asked for this, and was closed in spite of not doing it because the maintainer felt it was obvious and didn't need commenting. Obvious is relative; I've been a DD for about ten years and didn't think of it, had to ask on debian-devel, so I disagree. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2010/03/msg00221.html Please consider adding this to the man page, along with other environment variables which affect the behavior of dpkg-deb.
