The version available in Debian is useless for Squeeze or Sid, at least with the majority of printers and settings. I don't know what changed or exactly when, but it was sometime around June 2009 or earlier in Sid. A few months ago I just installed an updated version (1.1.15) from the official website, and it works fine (although there are some minor changes to the way the GUI presents information). In addition to system-config-printer, I had to install python-cups, python-smbclient, and the cupshelpers, also from the maintainer's website, or perhaps just linked from there. I also remember having a few issues with hal-cups-utils, but think that just leaving the Debian package in place worked best.
