I have more informations now.
This trouble occurs only when the network is down.
Reproduce the trouble with an inexistant host was a wrong idea. Sorry.
Desactivating network on my Lenny Desktop doesn't give the same result. Timeout 
is working.
Initially I had the same problem when I was working in mutt, loosing suddenly 
my (bad) network connection.
Only a kill could give me the shell back.
