OK, upstream actually found the problem -- the input PostScript file contains a /setdistillerparams on its own, which then overrides whatever I set on the command line (since it's executed later). Thus, GhostScript really works as intended. IMHO, this should at least be documented, and preferrably there should be an override switch in ps2pdfwr.
