I have found a workaround: explicitly state a default in .asoundrc:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
and choosing default in audacity does the trick on my desktop (w/ card 0 & 1)
and my laptop (w/ card 0).
